BIG UP THE LADIES

Ahead of our ‘BIG UP THE LADIES’ event this Sunday - celebrating International Women’s Day - we asked everyone to share their views on the most exciting shifts in music culture...

"More inclusive line ups, still a long way to go but i love that there’s a lot more opportunities available for under represented people in music" ~ Abby Daze

“More black women and gender non-conforming people being acknowledged for the historical cultural footprint in the scene xx” ~ Achiya

"In a way, over-saturation has done us all a favour and I think many artists have stopped chasing broad appeal. Big platforms have stopped feeling aspirational, and I believe energy is shifting back to the underground where it belongs. I think artists are making music that is more specific, more unapologetic and honestly just more interesting now versus the last few years, and I find that really inspiring and exciting." ~ Jayemkayem

"I think that people are becoming more intentional with where they spend their money, choosing to spend their money on promoters and venues whose values and booking practices align with their own — and supporting small venues, underground events and community spaces (like our beloved PW!)." ~ Rula Bula

"One exciting shift I’ve noticed in music culture is the growing diversity at raves. There’s still a long way to go, but it’s comforting being able to go to certain events and know the crowd will be mixed." ~ Sali

"It’s inspiring to see more FLINTA spaces opening up that welcome people of all skill levels, from beginners to professionals. Spaces like these are so important for building community and bringing our female voices together in an industry that can sometimes feel hard to access. Spaces like Sisu which i'm so lucky to be apart of has increased my outreach and capabilities." ~ Sazzle

"Genres and scenes are blurring in an exciting way. Diversity in music is sparking cross-pollination and connecting people, but there's still some way to go, especially in production. Nurturing a supportive, collaborative community matters now more than ever." ~ Yasmine
